Hi MAMS Class of 2023 and welcome to TEAM 4!
I hope that you all had a great summer and that you are ready for an exciting year in Social Studies, I know that I am. I decided to jot down a few things about myself here on my website just in case you were wondering a little bit more about me.
I have been teaching at MAMS for 14 years now, and am involved in many activities around the school. To name a few, I coach the 8th Grade Boy's Soccer team and 8th Grade Boy's Baseball team; and I am the adviser for Yearbook Club. I also serve as the Dean of Students at Merrick Avenue.
It is safe to say, that I am a big sports fan . . . The Mets and Giants are my two favorite teams. Don't worry if you are a Yankee fan though, I won't take off any points from your assignments just because you are part of the evil empire. Not only do I love watching sporting events, I also love to play. I played Rugby at Franklin & Marshall College where we made it to the Division III National Championships twice, and I still play softball competitively. Golf is another activity I am fond of, but not very good at. As you can probably tell from the picture on my website, I am also an avid skier. Yes, that is a real picture of your teacher tearing it up on the slopes at Jiminy Peak (I think I got some pretty good air on that one).
I do have a more artistic and creative side as well (I can't draw to save my life though). I happen to play the guitar in my spare time (self-taught my freshman year of college). In addition to using my guitar in class for social studies purposes, I have brought my other musical talents of singing Social Studies Rap Songs into the classroom. You will become very familiar with these songs throughout the year, and if you can figure out the nickname that I have been given by my colleagues and former students for my rapping abilities I may give you a extra point on one of your quizzes.
Speaking of quizzes, lets talk a little bit about school. Believe it or not, we already have something in common, as I also attended Merrick Avenue Middle School back in the 1990's. Wow, I feel old now! With that being said, I know what it is like to walk through the hallways of MAMS for the first time looking for a classroom that you can't seem to find because you need to be in room 242 (my room) and you are in the odd hallway. I understand the feeling of not being able to open your locker for the first week, or to be around 8th graders who look like they should be graduating from high school. I have been there before, and not only did I make it through, I even decided to come back for more as a teacher here. Take it from someone with experience, MAMS is a great place to be, and you will all do well if you work hard and have fun.
I really look forward to getting to know all of you throughout this school year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Amador
